Tarot Cards versus Oracle Cards—What’s the difference?

Card decks are an amazing divination tool that provide a means to connect with, and build, your intuitive capabilities. Working with cards in a healthy manner creates confidence, provides validation, and offers a powerful link of nurturing support. Divination cards also have the potential to clarify messages from your spirit guides and enrich your relationship with them. These cards assist you in building an energetic bridge between the earthly realm and the upper realms of being. Regularly working with any divination card deck also supports your enlightenment, healing, and growth.

There are so many options out there these days, that choosing a card deck can be a frustrating and confusing experience. A helpful place to begin in creating some clarity around divination cards is understanding the difference between a traditional tarot card deck and an oracle card deck.

So, what is the difference between a tarot card deck and an oracle card deck?

A tarot card deck is a seventy-eight-card deck which contains specific cards and meanings. This is consistent and does not change. Classic tarot cards have a lengthy history and have been used in the same manner for centuries. The tarot deck most likely originated in the thirteenth century in Italy. There can be a significant learning curve involved with a traditional tarot deck due to the large number of cards. This can be frustrating if you are new to using divination cards.

Oracle card decks are non-tarot decks that vary greatly. These decks are used for divination purposes and are usually based on a particular subject such as angels, spirit guides, goddesses, chakras, crystals, animals, and such. There are no set number of cards found in an oracle deck and this can differ significantly. Oracle decks have a lengthy history most likely dating back to the fifteenth century in Europe. These card decks, especially a smaller deck, make an excellent beginner’s divination tool.

When selecting a divination deck, tarot or oracle, allow your heart and your intuition to guide your choice. Is there a particular deck that you feel strongly drawn to or that directly catches your attention? This is a sure sign that you have found your deck!

Additionally, for those of you who have heard the old myth that you cannot buy your own cards, that is absolutely not true. It is important that you select a divination deck that you feel connected to as this supports your intuitive bond with the cards.
